David Jeremiah once said, “Everywhere you go, you meet them; the ones who sit on the back row of life, whispering, and rolling their eyes. I’m talking about the people who aren’t really headed anywhere, yet they’re eager and quick to criticize those who are. It seems that everywhere you turn there they are, and it’s sad but true that we find this kind of people in the church as well. Today, we call them cynics, but in Jesus’ day, they were called Pharisees.”

There is a story of Benjamin Franklin speaking to a crowd about the wonderful guarantee of liberty provided by the United States Constitution. Midway through his talk, one of these cynics yelled out, “But what about this pursuit of happiness? Where’s our guarantee of happiness?”

Franklin smiled and replied, “My friend, the Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness; you have to catch it yourself.”

I appreciate what Benjamin Franklin said and I’m sure you do to because what he said is being revealed in our world today. Happiness is not an entitlement. There is no government funding for it. You can’t buy it at the health-food store or even at the ritziest store in the mall.

There seem to be a lot people in this world who are in pursuit of things they feel will bring them happiness only to discover that the happiness they seek – they never truly find.

A completed college degree, their faith, the church, that wide-screen television, the luxury automobile with the new car smell, the home with the huge yard in the back. Perhaps while reading this article you can testify with me that, there are some things in your possession or in your life that have lost their fizzle. They have lost their edge. Their spark has diminished and their thrill is gone. In other words, it doesn’t challenge you any longer. It doesn’t excite you like it did in the beginning.

What is it for you? Is it the marriage that you’re in? Is it your baby’s daddy, or perhaps the career you chose? Is it the man or the woman you’ve been dating, your financial status, your faith, your relationship with God? Have you been driving through this life in neutral for so long that you’ve become one of those cynics?

You haven’t really seen God do much in YOUR life so you jump on others who claim to have God moving and working in their lives. You sneer at the so called sham Christianity that you see on television, yet the true Christianity that you say you have shows no evidence of changing you, growing you, or declaring that you have a healthy spiritual life.

In T.V. audiences the folks are praising, shouting, serving, giving, praying, and high-fiving one another. You swear that it’s all suspect so you say, “It doesn’t take all that!” Yet with the truth you SAY you’ve found, you’re not any closer to God. You’re giving less, you’re serving less, you’re worshipping less, you’re praying less, and in your heart, you’re becoming less and less forgiving. You no longer believe that God CAN so you’ve made it a habit to doubt that God HAS done anything in the lives of others.

Or, perhaps you simply stay away. You stay away from the church and you stay away from the people of God so you won’t feel convicted if the blessings and the miracles that are taking place in other folks lives, is in direct conflict to how you’re living your life.

Yet when we look around you can’t help but run into people who have a sense of purpose, people with a passion and a practice that almost makes us envious. I’m talking about those men and women of God who don’t seem to be troubled by anyone or anything.

When you get around them they have a real, living excitement for life. Not some cheap, store-bought, amusement park-simulated excitement, I mean they have the real thing.

You see them in the front of you on Sunday mornings. You see them on the job, just two offices down the hall. You see them one aisle up in the supermarket. You see the glitter in her eyes and the swagger in his stride, and way down, somewhere deep in your heart, you hear yourself saying, “I want what she has. I want what he has. I want that kind of life. I want that kind of joy! I want that kind of living!”

I want the kind of living that causes me to leap out of bed in the morning, filled with intent, and filled with purpose. I want to live a life that’s filled with excitement about the prospect of another twenty-four hours on earth.

I don’t want to be purpose-impaired. I want to be purpose-driven. I don’t want to live out the rest of my days with a surplus of longing, and yearning, hopelessness and loneliness.

I want to live a life that is filled with an overwhelming passion for Jesus Christ.

Do you remember when Jesus first came into your life? Do you recall how your blood was pumping, when your heart was skipping beats, and it seemed, there was some purpose in life that you were reaching toward with every ounce of your being?

Well, I need to tell you that God has set a goal for each of us and that goal is “Above and Beyond”. Day by day we’re being challenged to become “Above and Beyond” people in a relationship with an “Above and Beyond” God.

No more mediocrity! No more complacency! No more business as usual! We need to move. The clouds are not setting, but the clouds are moving. Our path has been set and the time has come for us to get moving! It’s time to move from being just a pew member, and become a member of the body of Christ!

It’s time to move from just being a church member to becoming missionaries, and from being missionaries to becoming ministers and ambassadors of Jesus Christ.

No matter where you are in your life today, I’m trying to tell you that it’s time to move up a little higher. If you’ve just been a pew member – it’s time to move. If you’ve just been sitting and not serving – it’s time to move. If you’ve just been serving but not sharing – it’s time to move. There is another level that God wants to take you to!

It’s time to reach higher, stretch wider, and move out further than you have ever gone before! It’s time to move “Above and Beyond!”
