The state on Monday witnessed turnstile politics— the entry of PRP MLAs and exit of pro-Jagan MLAs— which ultimately holds electoral algorithm good for chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy. As announced by YSR Congress leaders, as many as 26 MLAs (23 of Congress, two of TDP and one of PRP) submitted their resignations to the Assembly secretary in the morning. All of them submitted their resignations in the prescribed format. Sometime ago three Congress MLAs from Telangana had submitted their resignations demanding separate Telangana. The three— K Surekha, Jayasudha and Satyawati— too extended their support to YSRC and demanded that their resignations too should be accepted along with those who resigned now. In all, 29 MLAs came out openly in support of YS Jagan on Monday. Explaining the reasons for their resignations, they said they were pained to see the late chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s name figure in the FIR filed by the CBI and were unable to stay on in the “murky” Congress. They said they were not sure whether their resignations would be accepted by the speaker or rejected as those of Telangana MLAs recently. If the speaker does not accept the resignations, the YSRC leaders may knock on the doors of the Raj Bhavan or court of law.

As the pro-Jagan MLAs were paying floral tributes to YSR at his statue in Somajiguda and drove straight to the Assembly to submit their resignations, actor-turned politician Chiranjeevi arrived at the Begumpet airport by a special flight from Delhi and drove straight to Gandhi Bhavan where his 17 MLAs and other leaders took the membership of the Congress in the presence of the PCC chief, chief minister and other leaders.

PRP MLAs’ official entry into the Congress nullified the exit of pro- Jagan MLAs who also faxed their resignations from the primary membership of the Congress. “We have faxed our resignations from the party membership to the PCC chief. We do not want to continue in the Congress party,” YSRC leader Konda Surekha said. But YSRC leaders are not sure if the speaker will accept their resignations. Said MLA and former minister P Subhashchandra Bose: “Any rejection of our resignations will spell doom to the Congress.”

Immediately after submitting their resignations, the YSRC leaders went to Idupulapaya to visit the YSR Samadhi and pay tributes to the departed chief minister. The PRP MLAs, who were inducted into the Congress, have started dreaming of ministerial posts but the chief minister is sitting pretty and not under any compulsion to accommodate them as the main ppposition party, Telugu Desam, is in no mood to topple the government.
