Will the Sakala Janula Samme (SJS) also peter out the way the non-cooperation movement had ended? Do the employees have the wherewithal and resilience to sustain SJS to achieve the larger goal of separate Telangana?

As SJS entered the 10th day on Thursday, paralysing normal life in the entire region, questions are abounding on the ability of the employees’ Joint Action Committee (JAC) to intensify the agitation and keep the morale of the employees high. An executive engineer in the roads and buildings department, Sriman told TOI that it was not possible to mount pressure on the government with agitations by employees alone.

“The T movement needs a sustained thrust and those participating in the strikes and dharnas should be ready for more sacrifices. But the salaried class do not have it in them to carry on the struggle as it all boils down to ‘roti, kapada aur makhan’ at the end of the day,” he observed.

Sources in JAC said that some of the striking employees who had stayed away from duties for the last 10 days were ready to join the duty any time. “Several others are ready to strike up to Dasara festival. But we are certain the strike would not sustain after Dasara. Patience is running out among a section of the employees,” sources said.

However, employees’ JAC Nizamabad president Gaini Gangaram asserted that they would continue their stir till the statehood for Telangana is granted by the Centre. “There is no question of withdrawing the strike before Dasara. We are ready to forego salaries and face any consequences for the cause of Telangana,” he told TOI.

Analysts point out that Telangana NGOs president Swamy Goud’s recent statement about non-participation of all sections of the society in the movement was creating doubts among the employees on the continuation of the strike. Swamy Goud, had made it clear that creation of Telangana was not possible only with employees’ stir.

“The employees are doing their best to highlight the T issue by abstaining from work. But they very well know that it’s a long road ahead towards the goal,” political analyst Chakrapani said.

Though the non-cooperation movement was taken up amidst much fanfare on February 17 this year with the aim of getting a firm assurance from the government on the creation of Telangana, it was wound up on March 5 without achieving the aim.

Sources said the employees were unhappy over non-participation of all sections of the people in Sakala Janula Samme, which was basically aimed at roping in all the stakeholders (people) involved in the T movement. “But that’s not happening. Except teachers, RTC employees, coal miners and staff of some departments, others are not taking part in the strike. The very purpose of SJS thus is being defeated,” a JAC leader, not wanting to be named, said.

Corroborating this, an employee of the medical and health department, Sashivardhan, said the T stir would get momentum only if all the people join it. “Though 7.5 lakh employees in 10 T districts are on strike, the voice in support of ‘Jai Telangana’ continues to be muffled,” he felt.
