Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) K Yerram Naidu held an unscheduled meeting with Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackerary at Matoshree on Thursday. A trusted aide of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Yerram Naidu described the meet a courtesy call.

The meeting has assums significant political importance since Thackeray, a fortnight ago, had made a statement that only Shiv Sena and Telugu Desam Party have the capacity to topple the Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance government.

Yerram, who is the TDP parliamentary party leader, said: “We did not discuss politics. It was apolitical meeting. Since I was in Mumbai to call on Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, I thought, I should also meet Thackeray, since Shiv Sena is one of the important constituents of the NDA. My meeting should not be linked to what Thackeray said last week.”

Incidentally, senior Shiv Sena cabinet members Manohar Joshi, Suresh Prabhu and Balasaheb Vikhe Patil have had separate meetings with Chandrababu Naidu in Hyderabad in the last week of September.

“They were also courtesy meetings. It is a practice for the Union Ministers to call on the Chief Minister of a state they visit,” Yerram Naidu, who was accompanied by Shiv Sena leader Kanhaiyalal Gidwani, added.

Addressing the annual Dussehra rally at the historic Shivaji Park, Thackeray had stressed the need to launch a revolution and that the Shiv Sena and the TDP have the capacity to topple the NDA government.

“We have the capacity to topple the NDA Government, but we will never take that drastic step in the larger interest of the nation and we do not want mid-term polls. Out commitment is to support the BJP as well as Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee,” Thackeray said.

Thackeray said at a juncture when national political parties have miserably failed to deliver the goods, it will be appropriate to form the federation of regional political parties to provide result-oriented administration.

“Quite a large number of states are ruled by regional parties, under such circumstances, it will be better to form a federation. However, I am making it clear that I will not take a lead in setting up the formation since I have no stakes. Setting the aside ego, I feel that all regional parties should take a lead for the purpose. If Chandrababu Naidu takes a lead, I will certainly support him,” Thackeray added.

Thackeray did not rule out the possibility of an alliance between the Shiv Sena and the TDP in Andhra Pradesh. “We have an alliance with the BJP in Maharashtra, if it helps us, we will not hesitate to enter Andhra Pradesh. Coming together is not a crime,” he pointed out.

On the massive hike in the prices of petroleum products, Thackeray came down heavily on Trinamool Congress leader and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying, it was a different kind of blackmailing. “She had no moral right to protest against the price hike, since she was party to decision. In the cabinet, when the hike was approved, she never lodged a protest or objected to it and now for obvious political reasons, she has resigned from the cabinet with an eye on the local elections in West Bengal. We never indulge in such poor tactics,” he added.

Thackeray remarked that the hike in the prices of petroleum products was inevitable in view of the global situation. “As far as I understand, the prices were hiked owing to international situation,” he said.

Replying to a question, Thackeray said now there was no dispute over allocation of portfolios to Shiv Sena cabinet members. “I am happy with the new portfolio given to Suresh Prabhu,” he said. In the recent reshuffle, Vajpayee had allocated power department to Prabhu.
