The UP government’s ban on ‘Aarakshan’ has left the people across the state disappointed. Most of them felt the ban

would whet the curiosity to watch the movie. “Public would not have got influenced by mere dialogues. The ban has only

generated more curiosity and people will somehow manage to watch it,” Anita Saran, a school teacher, said.

The cinema hall and multiplex owners see it as an opportunity lost. “With the star cast comprising Amitabh Bachchan,

Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone brought together by a director like Prakash Jha, who is known for his work on real

life issues, the film was expected to be a big hit,” says Vinod Anand, owner of Pratibha theatre in Lucknow. “The ban

has come as a loss for everyone – the multiplex owners by way profits from ticket sales, the government will lose in

terms of entertainment tax and the film-lovers will be deprived of a good movie,” he adds.Government officer AK Singh

felt the ban was not needed. “The ban would send a message that our right to freedom of speech and expression is being

curbed though that may not be the case. This would go against the government,” he said.

In Kanpur too, where two dozen prints of the film were sent for screening at multiplexes and theatres, people opposed

the ban. Prof Manoj Mishra of Dayanand Anglo Vedic College said: “People are mature enough to decide the film’s fate.

The decision to ban reflects sarkari mindset.” Sandesh Gupta, an IIT Kanpur alumnus, added that, “Perhaps the

government was not sure of controlling a law and order problem post the movie’s release and hence chose to ban it.”

In Varanasi, theatre operators were dejected. “We had made a schedule of 13 shows at IP Malls in Sigra and Vijaya. But

now will not be able to screen the film. Besides, there is no big movie in the pipeline,” Manish Talwar, operator for

IP Malls, said. Deepesh Kumar of JHV Mall added that operators were hopeful of doing good business. Residents also gave

a thumbs down to the ban. “Instead of opposing the film, government should hold a debate on reservation,” Lenin

Raghuvanshi, a social activist, said.

Residents of Allahabad echoed similar views. “Banning a film or book is like banning a point of view which does not

suit world’s largest democracy,” Kshitij Srivastava said. Cinema operators rued the loss of investment. “We had booked

the film hoping to do good business. But now the efforts have gone waste,” an office-bearer of cinema operators

association said.

“It is paradoxical that the film has become controversial even before its release and the government is only provoking

people to watch this movie by preventing its release,” says Yaminee, a movie buff in Gorakhpur.

BAN(E) CULTURE IN UP

December 2010 | State culture department banned the staging of the play ‘Vagina Monologues’ after a section of

vernacular media reported that it was not fit for the people of Lucknow. The ban was challenged by organiser Bhupesh

Rai in the Lucknow bench of Allahabad high court. The case is still pending.

September 2008 | Shyam Benegal’s ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’ was banned reportedly because of its content. It was said that

the setting of the film was based in UP and its political satire showed the state in bad state. The state government,

however, allowed the release after some scenes were deleted.

November 30, 2007 | UP chief minister Mayawati banned Madhuri Dixit’s comeback film ‘Aaja Nachle’ in the state

following complaints that its title song had some casteist remarks like “bole mochi bhi khud ko sunar hai (even a

cobbler calls himself a jeweller).” The CM wrote to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding a countrywide ban on

the film saying that it hurt the sentiments of dalits. The state government, however, allowed release of the film after

producers removed the objectionable portion of the song.
